Halloween, next to Christmas and Hanukkah, is a huge holiday in my household. To get into the spirit of the season, my five-year-old son and I made creepy cupcakes this past weekend. It was a great opportunity to spend time in the kitchen with Zane to have some spooky fun.
The best costume any cupcake can have is with a Wilton Halloween Baking Cup. With so many available, we couldn’t pick just one pattern. Zane decided to mix and match using the baking cups from the Spooky Pop Cupcake Combo and the Spooky Pop Pumpkin Standard Baking Cup.
Zane helped me measure the ingredients for the batter. And, of course, we couldn’t leave it plain. Using Wilton Icing Colors, we tinted the cupcake batter a gruesome zombie gray. Hey, it’s Halloween!
Perfect for his hand, Zane used the Scoop-It Batter Spoons to fill the baking cups. (These helpful spoons are also great for pancake and muffin batter.) Once the cupcakes were baked and cooled completely, it was time to make the icing.
I let Zane select the color. “Black, Momma!” Black? Again, it’s Halloween! So, we iced the cupcakes black—the perfect canvas for our zombie-fied cupcakes.
Now it was time to decorate, and let Zane’s creativity shine! I spread out a bunch of fun items, like Wilton Halloween Sprinkles, Large Spooky Candy Eyeballs, Eyeballs & Eyebrows Fun Pix and Spooky Pop Pals with Candy Corn Royal Icing Decorations.
His favorites were the Black Licorice Strings and Green Licorice Strings. He could break off pieces to add to a cupcake, and then break off a couple more pieces to eat! I think more licorice was eaten than used.
Zane enjoyed making each cupcake a masterpiece. And, I enjoyed watching and spending time with him. Once all were decorated, we placed them in the Spooky Pop Cupcake Bakery Box Caddy.
