A Monkey of a First Birthday!

December 9th, 2009 by Shawn Broda

I took a break from holiday baking this weekend to do a project for my little cousin Nico’s 1st birthday, and a Monkey cake and animal cupcakes were the perfect choice!

Monkey Birthday CakeI started with the main cake. One of my favorite ways to decorate a sheet cake is with a candy plaque made using a Wilton Shaped Pan and Candy Melts. They are fun, easy and can be made in advance. Using the Monkey Pan and Light Cocoa, Dark Cocoa, and White Candy Melts®, I molded my plaque just like I would regular molded candies — start with the smallest sections and work your way up, refrigerating the mold between layers until the color is set.

When the plaque was completely set, I flipped it onto a cake board and kept it in a cool, dry place until I was ready to place it on my cake. After decorating the cake with Ready to Use Icing, it was ready to go.

Monkey Treat TableBecause we were a very large group, I decided that my monkey cake needed a tower of cupcakes to go with it. I used Jungle Pals Baking Cups and Jungle Pals Icing Decorations and placed my cupcakes on the 4-Tier Stacked Dessert Tower. What a fun centerpiece for the cake table!

Monkey Smash Cake And, a first birthday party wouldn’t be complete without a smash cake. Nico enjoyed his own 6 inch cake as much as we enjoyed watching him. Who knew a cake project to feed 75 people could be so easy? Well, I did, but don’t tell my family, you’ll give away my secret!

Thank you for your interest in Wilton classes. There are two options for you. We do have a few stores in the San Juan area that offer Wilton Method classes in Spanish. To find a store near you, visit our class locator at http://www.wilton.com/classes/classlocator.cfm. If you enter your zip code, the list of stores in PR that offer classes will come up.

If you want to travel to Illinois to attend a course at The Wilton School, there are many different options to choose from. Vist our Wilton School page at http://www.wilton.com/classes/wiltonschool/ for a complete schedule and more details. Classes at The Wilton School are taught in English.

I hope this information is helpful – happy decorating!
