Add a festive look to this yule log cake by adding cranberries, candy leaves or meringue mushrooms.

  • 4 eggs, separated
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar, divided
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • powdered sugar for dusting towel

  • 1 cup (2 sticks) butter, softened
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • 4 cups sifted powdered sugar (confectioners' sugar)
  • 2 tablespoons plus 1 teaspoon milk, divided
  • 3 tablespoons cocoa powder
