Step 1

1 DAY IN ADVANCE

Make cookie head and body. Prepare and roll out cookie dough following recipe directions. For head, use second largest (4 1/4 in.) cutter from 4-pc. circles nesting metal cutter set to cut cookie. For body, use largest cutter (5 1/8 in.) from set to cut cookie. Move cutter over 1 1/2 in. to cut oval shape 3 3/4 in. wide. Bake and cool cookies.

Step 2

Bake and cool butterfly cake. Cake is one layer, 2 in. high. Place cake on foil-wrapped board, cut to fit.

Step 3

Decorate cake. Prepare buttercream icing following recipe directions. Tint portions rose, black and lemon yellow. Reserve remaining white. Use spatula and rose icing to ice cake sides and background areas smooth. Use spatula and white icing to ice wing areas smooth. Use tip 12 and white icing to pipe swirls on wings. Use tip 12 and rose icing to pipe ball bottom border.

Step 4

Decorate cookies. Use tip 12 and white icing to attach body cookie to cake. Use tip 14 and black and yellow icing to cover cookie with stars, making stripes, 1/2 in. wide. Use tip 12 and white icing to attach head cookie to cake. Use tip 3 to pipe in black oval eyes and rose oval cheeks. Pat smooth with finger dipped in cornstarch. Use tip 3 to pipe white dot eye highlights and black outline smile. Use tip 14 and yellow icing to fill in head with stars.

For antennae, cut two pieces of black licorice, 6 in. long. Shape into curves. Use tip 3 and white icing to attach to back of head. Use tip 12 and yellow icing to pipe a ball on end of antenna.
