Cute handmade baby topper is nestled high atop a stack of pillow cakes. Create fondant buttons and rick-rack in our Fabric Fondant and Gum Paste Mold, then add a touch of glimmer with White Pearl Dust.
In advance: Prepare baby topper. For boy or girl: Tint 4 oz. fondant copper. Roll out
fondant 1/8 in. thick as needed. Tape top hole of head globe closed. Cut a 6 in. fondant
circle. Brush globe with Piping Gel and cover with fondant, smoothing with hands. Trim
excess fondant; cut fondant away from bottom hole. Let dry. Use FoodWriter to draw
black eyes and smile on both; draw pink cheeks on baby girl. Reserve excess fondant for
Baby girl: Roll out 3 oz. white fondant 1/8 in. thick as needed. Cut a 6 in. diameter
circle. Brush body globe with Piping Gel and cover with circle, smoothing with hands and
shaping a ruffled bottom edge. Trim as needed. Clear fondant from top hole; attach head.
Use reserved copper fondant to roll 3/8 x 1 1/4 in. long log arms. Flatten one end for hand
and cut slits for fingers. Attach arms using damp brush. Roll out white. Cut a 1 1/4 in. circle;
cut in half to make two sleeves. Attach cut edge to body and wrap around arms. Cut two
1 x 2 in. wide diamonds. Fold each in half to make 1 in. wide loop for half of bow; attach
to head. Roll small ball; attach for knot.
Baby boy: Roll out white fondant 1/8 in. thick as
needed. Cut a 6 in. diameter circle. Brush globe with Piping Gel and cover with circle of
fondant, smoothing with hands. Trim excess and clear both holes; attach pillar and head.
Shape 1 x 3/4 in. flattened oval shoes; attach using damp brush. Cut two triangles for 1 1/4
in. wide bowtie; attach. Roll small ball for knot; attach. Roll two 2 x 1/2 in. log arms; shape
and attach. Use copper fondant to shape 3/4 x 1/2 in. flattened oval hands. Use knife tip to
indent fingers; attach with damp brush.
Bake and cool 2-layer cakes using firm-textured batter such as pound cake. Assemble each
pillow on a cut-to-fit cake board. Prepare cakes for Stacked Construction. Ice and
cover cakes working with one pillow at a time. Ice smooth and cover top layer with fondant. Smooth fondant and trim at seam. Place cake board on top and carefully flip to
position covered layer on the bottom. Ice smooth and cover new top layer with fondant;
smooth and trim. Immediately score 45° lines 1 1/2 in. apart using Cutter/Embosser fitted with
wavy wheel. Repeat process for next two pillows. Paint top half of cakes with Pearl Dust. Use fondant and Fabric Mold to make 144 buttons. Attach where lines cross using
damp brush. Use fondant and mold to make rick-rack trim sections (28 in. for top, 40 in. for
middle, 52 in. for bottom layer). Attach over side seams. Trim pillar from Globe Set to 7 in.
At reception: Assemble stacked cakes. Insert pillar in top tier and slide on baby.
